Workplaces must provide fire protection and fire-fighting equipment that is appropriate for the types of workplace.

The fire extinguisher, or other fire-fighting equipment, required will depend on the hazards and fuel loads in your workplace. It is important to be aware that some fire-fighting equipment can be extremely dangerous when used on the wrong type of fire.

Water

Water extinguishers are designed for wood, paper and textile fires. They work to remove the heat of the fire.

It is important to be aware that water extinguishers can be dangerous when used on flammable liquid, energised electrical equipment and cooking oil/fat fires.

ABE

ABE, otherwise known as Dry Chemical or Powder fire extinguishers, are designed for the following fires:

  • Wood, paper and textile
  • Flammable and combustible liquids
  • Flammable gases
  • Electricity energised equipment

Some Powder chemicals may only list BE, so look carefully at the extinguisher to determine if it is an ABE or BE extinguishers, as their capability is different.

CO2 (Carbon Dioxide)

CO2, or Carbon Dioxide, fire extinguishers work by depleting the oxygen from a fire and are designed for electrical fires.

CO2 fire extinguishers are not suitable for outdoor use.

Wet Chemical

Wet chemical fire extinguishers are a more recent innovation in the extinguishing of fires. Not only do they remove the heat from a fire, but by creating a barrier between the oxygen and the fuel, it assists prevent the re-ignition of a fire.

This type of chemical is designed for cooking oil and fat fires and is recommended in any industrial kitchen.

Fire Blankets

Fire blankets are made from a woven fire resistant fabric and are an efficient and effective way to control cooking oils and fats. They may also be used as a barrier to protect oneself and safely evacuate a fire, or extinguish a person’s clothing that may be on fire.

Fire blankets come in a range of sizes, including:

  • 1.2 x 1.2 metres
  • 1.2 x 1.8 metres
  • 1,8 x 1.8 metres
