Just because it still feels like winter in Adelaide today, the Londonderry bushfire in New South Wales is a reminder of how dangerous fires are. 55 properties came under threat yesterday. As a result, residents were told to seek shelter as the fire approached because it was too late to get out.
While it’s been a cold start in Adelaide, the Fire Danger Season has already started, or starts tomorrow (15th November) for most fire ban districts in South Australia. The Adelaide Metropolitan, Mount Lofty Ranges and Kangaroo Island districts’ Fire Danger Season starts on the 1st December.
So, do you know what to do in a fire? Are you prepared?
Simple steps that could save you and your property this summer include:
- Prepare your home and business by clearing vegetation and rubbish away from buildings and structures.
- Aim to create a buffer zone by managing trees and vegetation for up to 20 metres around buildings and structures
- Have the right equipment available, including extinguishers, hoses, first aid kits and other emergency supplies
- Protect your assets with adequate insurances
- Understand which Fire Ban District you’re in, where the closest Bushfire Safer Places are, and what the Fire Danger Ratings mean for you
- Stay informed and aware of fires and threats – look and listen for information on television, radio, internet, mobile phones and speaking with neighbours
Communication is key in fires. One useful form of communication is the Alert SA app. Alert SA is a free app giving you access to timely, relevant and personalised event and warning information. Click here or download through your phone’s app store.
The CFS website has a comprehensive range of information, emergency details and other key information to help you plan and protect yourself in the event of a fire. Click here for the CFS website. WLSS is also here to help you through the process and can provide assistance to create emergency management plans, supply emergency equipment, train and induct workers and provide refresher training.
