SafeWork SA are encouraging all South Australians to get involved in helping make their workplaces safe, by participating in National Safe Work Month this October.
Every years approximately 250 Australians die from work-related injuries and over 2,000 Australians die from a work-related illness. These tragedies are preventable.
Further statistics from National Safe Work Month include:
- In 2015, 96% of workplace fatalities were male.
- Being involved in a vehicle incident continues to be the most common cause of workplace fatalities.
- In 2015, 34% of workers who died were machinery operators and drivers.
- In 2013-14 there were 106,565 serious workers’ compensation claims in Australia.
- Each work related injury costs approximately $116,600.
October each year marks National Safe Work Month, which aims to improve awareness of work health and safety, encourage discussion about safety at work and share positive workplace stories from across Australia. To help workplaces to get involved in National Safe Work Month, Safe Work Australia have developed a National Safe Work Month Resource kit, including banners, fachsheets and statistics to be shared with workers.
To make work health and safe even more enticing, Safe Work Australia also invites workplaces to participate in the 2016 Workplace Participation Reward, for a chance to win a reward worth $5,000.
To get involved, check out SafeWork SA’s website for their program of local events.
