Work health and safety isn’t just about preventing injuries in the workplace. By taking a holistic approach to WHS can be beneficial to your overall health, and the overall health of your workers. This month, the Mo Bro’s and Mo Sista’s at WLSS are taking a holistic approach by getting involved with Movember.
The Movember Foundation started back in 2003, growing to a global charity, focused on tackling men’s health issues relating to prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health and suicide prevention. Unfortunately men experience worse longer-term health than women and die on average six years earlier. Prostate cancer rates will double in the next 15 years. Testicular cancer rates have already doubled in the last 50. Three quarters of suicides are men. Poor mental health leads to half a million men taking their own life every year. That’s one every minute.
By 2030, the Movember Foundation aims to reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25%
November, sorry Movember, is a great time to get together with work colleagues (both men and women) to discuss and promote health and wellness, not just in the workplace, but away from work as well.
Here are a few ideas for this month. But don’t just stop at the end of November, keep these, and any other health and wellness ideas, going throughout the year.
- Why not make your Toolbox or safety meetings mobile? Go for a walk as a group around your site, around the block or to a park and hold your meetings at the same time.
- Promote workers get regular health check ups
- Take a MO-ve challenge and get physically active during November – get a team together and run a race, learn a new sport or try something new
- Get a team together and sign up to Movember and get a bit of extra MO-tivation
